The thermal coffee machines eliminate the need for coffee mug warmers that stay on after brewing and keep heating your coffee possibly causing it to have a burnt taste.

Thermal carafe coffeemakers, instead, keep the coffee hot for a while, even for hours, after the coffee maker shuts off following the brew, as the carafe is insulated and keeps the heat inside.

This is actually the one of the differences between glass carafe coffee makers and thermal carafe brewers, as the thermal machines keep the coffee hot without the use of a coffee mug warmer, while the glass carafes still need a cup warmer after brewing in order to keep the coffee hot for longer.

However, before you buy a thermal coffee-maker make sure that:

1) it makes hot-enough coffee to begin with, and -

2) that it keeps the coffee hot afterwards indeed.

Recommended temperature for brewing coffee is about 200f degree. Remember that the temperature of your coffee is useful not only for it to be hot when drinking, but for extracting properly the flavors of the coffee beans whilst brewing.

This is actually a different issue not that much relevant to the use of the thermal carafe that is designed to preserve the heat of the coffee after brewing.

However, the initial brew temperature still matters, since the thermal carafe does not add heat but only keeps existent temperature of the coffee. Thus, if your coffee was not hot enough to begin with, the thermal carafe will be of little help in serving you hot coffee.

Regrettably, many low-end coffeemakers don't make very hot coffee, and people who like their coffee very hot often are disappointed by the brew temp of the coffee makers.

Still, temperature of the coffee is much of an individual preference, and while some like piping hot coffee, many others want their coffee just hot enough and scalding, so the coffeemakers serve them well, and so also the thermal coffeemakers that keep the coffee warm enough even if the initial brew was not really very hot. Ultimately, it remains for the coffee drinkers themselves to judge what works for them.
