A hand crank coffee grinder is not necessarily for camping, for black-out situations or for people in love with exotic ideas.
People prepare hand coffee mils at least for 2 additional reasons: think about the loud noise of coffee grinders. Not everyone can stand it, so some people like a hand grinder that does not sound as a lawn mower when grinding the beans.
Manual grinders are also usually less expensive than electric burr grinders. High-end burr mill coffee grinders can cost as much as several hundreds of dollars.
There are some pretty good hand coffee mills that will do the job when you don't need more than a single serve of coffee. They can mill coarse and fine, and while not automated and labor-free, they can make quite a good consistent grind and do the job for a fraction of the price of electric grinders.
